The Decade Drawn Out

Dazed & Confused Magazine are running a project where they invide artists and illustrators to draw one of their top 10 covers over the past decade. There are some great submissions here, so it’s definately worth checking out.

Below is my contribution, more a chance to do an illustrational piece as a change from sequentials, than a serious entry.

Nevermore

It came to light a few weeks back, that a few people weren’t aware of my involvement with Self Made Hero’s ‘Nevermore’, a graphic collection of 9 Edgar Allen Poe tales.

I was lucky enough to be given ‘The Raven’, perhaps the most memorable of all Poe’s works,  adapted by Dan Whithead.

Playbackstl.com had this to say about it.

“Nevermore opens, perhaps inevitably, with “The Raven” (W: Dan Whitehead, Stuart Tipples; A: Stuart Tipples) in an abbreviated version which retains the poem’s themes of desperation and loss while relocating it to a modern city. Tipples’ art is reminiscent of German Expressionist woodcuts in its angular shapes, strong contrasts, and oddly-tilted frames of reference, reflecting the speaker’s growing despair.”

The book also includes other industry favourites such as Jamie Delano, John Mcrea, Moore & Reppion and D’Isreli,  so I’m in good company.

The book is available in all good stores and online.

Batman Sketch in colour

Back in BICS this year I had a very busy time doing sketch commissions, although I did have a few spare moments (mostly when the big panels were on I think) and I drew a few things for myself. One of these was a Batman sketch with the ‘poncey art-school’ approach of ‘drawing the light’. Anyway it actually came out quite cool and was picked up by Marc Olivent.

Marc sent me a scanned and coloured version, which I think does the piece justice very well with a dark, moody pallette.

Cheers again Marc!
